The US reiterates its long held commitment to achieving stability in the region and a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq. The desire for political sovereignty on the part of various groups must be reconciled with our overarching goal of stability and security in Iraq and the region.
The US has worked with tremendous effort and expended enormous amounts of resources and energy to achieve these goals. This commitment is ongoing as evidenced by the continued presence of US troops in Iraq under the SOFA.
We are encouraged by efforts of both interested parties in Iraq to come to the table to engage in a constructive dialogue with a goal of maintaining regional peace.
At the same time we strongly urge outside parties to exercise the utmost restraint.
