1. Tensions rise as the crisis continues to go unresolved, and protests--which have spread from Baghdad to most major Iraqi cities--take a markedly sectarian tone. Protesters in the predominantly Sunni areas call for their elected officials to exploit the vacuum created in the GOI by the withdrawal of Kurds to augment their meager political representation, while several Shia protests have featured chants for the Shia to follow the Kurds example and create a separate Shia state in Iraq’s oil-rich south.
