Kurds are the largest ethnic minority in Syria making up 10% of the country's population. After denying citizenship in 1962, current data by Refugees International, estimate there are about 300,000 stateless Kurds in Syria. With an independent Kurdistan, the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Syria (KDPS), declares support for the cause and has requested annexation of northeastern Syria. The Syrian government, in consequence, has threatened retaliation against any nation in the region that recognizes Kurdistan and has placed the military on high alert. The government has imposed martial law in Kurd majority areas and placed the army in Al-Qamishli and Al Hasakah.
